Quezon City – The Philippine Chamber of Cooperatives Inc. commends President Marcos’s decision to proceed with the Land Public Transport Modernization Program. The program has been extended 7 times, and the majority of the transport sector has already consolidated and embraced the government’s modernization program, despite a resolution filed by the Senate seeking its temporary suspension.
The President is evidently attentive to the concerns of the 83.3% majority of the transport sector that has complied with the consolidation requirements, particularly the cooperatives that are efficiently operating and meeting the public’s transportation needs.
This decision demonstrates the President’s determination to advance the modernization of the transport system, even in the face of imperfections in the program.
National Anti-Poverty Commission Cooperative Sectoral Council and Coop Chamber Trustee Lilian Silubrico emphasized that in the Philippines, the private sector, represented by transport cooperatives in partnership with the government, plays a crucial role in creating a modern, well-managed, and environmentally sustainable transport sector. This ensures that drivers and operators have stable, sufficient, and dignified livelihoods, while also ensuring that commuters arrive at their destinations safely and comfortably.
We express our gratitude to the President for his decision to proceed with the Public Transport Modernization Program and urge him to urgently certify the passage of Senate Bill No. 105 and House Bill 09061, which seek to institutionalize the Public Transport Modernization Program. These measures will establish a fair and more humane modernization program that will benefit the riding public and the country as a whole.
