The 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, is progressing in negotiations for climate financing from developed nations to support the urgent needs of developing countries.
The Philippines, highly vulnerable to climate change, faces issues such as rising sea levels and extreme weather events. Recent severe storms, including Storm Kristine and Super Typhoon Leon, have led to significant infrastructure damage and displaced thousands of families, highlighting the urgency of action to avoid breaching the 1.5 °C temperature rise threshold.
Industries continue to emit greenhouse gases (GHGs), primarily from coal and fossil fuels, exacerbating climate change. The cooperative movement in the Philippines is committed to advocating for climate justice and implementing sustainable programs in their communities, guided by the principle of “Concern for the Community.”
“Caring for the community involves a greater level of collective action, which is the care for the environment,” emphasized Chairperson of the Coop Chamber and CLIMBS CEO and President Noel Raboy regarding the recent developments in Baku.
It is essential for the cooperative movement to raise awareness about climate change effects and engage developed countries and policymakers to implement the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG). We need to push for transparent, equitable financing processes to ensure that funding commitments are honored.
Given that the Philippines is predominantly agricultural, cooperatives in agriculture and fisheries will actively monitor COP29 commitments and ensure accountability regarding funding for loss and damage. Millions of farmers and fisherfolk will benefit from these initiatives.
As we face this climate emergency, it is crucial for the cooperative movement to act swiftly and in solidarity with global efforts.
